What is the Difference Between OEM Glass and Aftermarket?

Category: News

When your windshield or other auto glass needs to be replaced in Cleveland or Northeast Ohio you have a choice of what type of glass to replace it with.

There are times when the decision is up to the insurance company, but other times the decision is up to you, the consumer. If you're unclear about what decision to make regarding your auto glass, let C-Auto Glass help educate you to help you make a more informed decision.

OEM Glass

OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer glass. This type of glass is produced at the same factories that automakers use, and these products will be identical to the factory-installed auto glass that came with your car when it was brand new. OEM glass is manufactured specifically to meet your car maker's regulations and should match the original specifications such as size, shape, thickness, & durability. Also, you can be assured of OEM's safety factor because this glass is certified by the Department of Transportation.

Aftermarket Glass

Aftermarket glass is manufactured by companies who don't necessarily have contracts with the automakers and may differ in some ways from your factory-installed auto glass. Most commonly, aftermarket glass will differ in color or tint as well as thickness and durability; however, it will have the identical shape and size of your original windshield or other auto glass. Because of copyright laws and due to no contract with the automakers, these differences are sometimes intentional because aftermarket auto glass manufacturers are prohibited from producing windshields and other auto glass that is identical to the original, factory-installed glass.

In general, the differences between OEM glass and aftermarket glass are usually small. Consumers who are especially discriminating may express displeasure with aftermarket auto glass because of the color or tint differences or because there exists a "wavy" quality in the new glass. Most people, though, notice little to no difference in their new aftermarket versions.

When deciding between aftermarket and OEM glass, there is one other important fact to consider--if your vehicle is leased.  C-Auto Glass highly recommends that you consult your leasing contract before getting any new auto glass installed. Depending on the contract, you may not have a decision and your auto glass must be replaced with OEM glass.
